Labro Finds the Lost Art Project
Chapter 1: The Scent of Worry
Labro's brass tag jingled as he trotted through Willowbrook Middle School's main entrance, his thick tail wagging in its characteristic high curve. Tuesday afternoons meant accompanying Ms. Peterson to her after-school art club, and Labro loved greeting the students who always saved him the best belly rubs.
Today, though, something felt different. His warm brown eyes locked onto a girl hunched against the lockers—Maya Chen, clutching her oversized purple sweater like a shield. Her shoulders trembled.
Labro approached cautiously, his broad muzzle nudging her hand with gentle persistence. Maya's tear-stained face lifted briefly. "My portfolio," she whispered, voice barely audible. "It's gone. All my paintings for the showcase... everything."
His ears perked forward, processing her distress. The annual art showcase was Friday—only three days away. He'd watched Maya work on those pieces for months, her confidence growing with each brushstroke when she thought nobody was watching.
"I can't tell anyone," Maya continued, her words tumbling faster now. "They'll think I'm careless. Ms. Peterson will be so disappointed. I should just quit."
Labro's nose twitched, catching something—a faint scent of acrylic paint and lavender soap, Maya's distinctive combination. The trail led toward the back hallway, then... stopped abruptly at the exit door.
Suddenly, the fire alarm shrieked. Students poured into the hallways, chaos erupting everywhere. When Labro turned back, Maya had vanished into the crowd, and the scent trail was obliterated by hundreds of shuffling feet.
