The Silent Song

The Silent Song

Pera's bells chimed softly as he hurried through Whisperwood Grove, his amber eyes scanning the luminescent mushrooms that painted the clearing in shades of violet and blue. Mira perched on a low branch ahead, her iridescent feathers catching the ethereal light—but something was terribly wrong.

"Show me," Pera said gently, stepping closer. The songbird opened her beak wide, throat trembling with effort. Nothing. Not even a whisper of her legendary voice that could make flowers bloom and streams dance.

Pera's mind raced. The Seasonal Concert was in three days. Without Mira's opening song, the forest's magic would weaken, and winter would arrive harsh and unprepared. He pulled his sketchbook from his rainbow-stitched satchel, flipping through designs until he found blank pages.

"We'll solve this," he said, his bells jingling as he crouched beside her. "When did it happen?"

Mira gestured with her wing toward the ancient Singing Stones at the grove's heart—massive crystals that hummed with stored melodies. She'd been practicing there at dawn when her voice simply... vanished.

Pera approached the stones carefully, his sage-green hair stirring in an unnatural breeze. Dark smudges marked the crystal surfaces—shadows that shouldn't exist in this sacred place. He reached out, and the stone beneath his fingertips felt cold, drained.

"Something took it," he whispered. Behind him, a rustling in the undergrowth made both friends freeze. A shape—darker than darkness itself—slipped between the trees and disappeared. Pera's heart hammered. Whatever stole Mira's voice was still here, watching them.
