The Mystery of the Missing Tennis Balls

Labro's brass tag jingled rhythmically as he bounded across Willowbrook Community Park, his otter-like tail held high in its characteristic happy curve. The crisp October air carried the scent of fallen leaves and morning dew. His warm brown eyes sparkled with anticipation—today marked his three hundredth consecutive morning of fetch in this exact spot.

But something was wrong.

His usual cache of tennis balls—the seven he'd carefully collected over the past month and hidden beneath the ancient oak tree—had vanished. Labro's eager, forward-leaning posture faltered. He circled the tree three times, his broad muzzle sweeping low across the grass, nostrils flaring. Nothing. Not even the familiar rubber scent remained.

A jogger passed, and Labro's tail wagged automatically, his infectious optimism momentarily overriding his concern. The woman smiled and continued on. He returned to his investigation, pawing at the dirt where his treasures should have been.

Then he spotted it: a single yellow tennis ball resting on a park bench fifty yards away. Labro's heart leaped. But as he approached, his keen intelligence registered something peculiar—muddy footprints led away from the bench toward the walking trails.
