The Riddle of the Forgotten Kingdom
The Mysterious Map
Q was reshelving a particularly stubborn volume on botanical enchantments when the library door creaked open. A hooded figure entered, water dripping from their cloak onto the ancient floorboards.
"I seek the keeper of stories," the visitor whispered.
Q adjusted their spectacles, studying the stranger with those large, dark eyes. "You've found them. Though I prefer 'librarian' to 'keeper.'" A gentle smile played at the corners of their mouth.
The figure produced a rolled parchment, its edges singed and spotted with age. "This belongs in your capable hands, not mine." Before Q could respond, the visitor vanished into the rain-swept forest.
Q spread the map across their reading desk, their fins shimmering unconsciously—they always did when something touched the boundary between reality and story. The parchment depicted the Forgotten Kingdom, a place Q had encountered only in the library's oldest manuscripts. Cryptic symbols marked various chambers, and at the center: "The Last Librarian's Legacy—books that reshape worlds."
A sharp bark of laughter made Q turn. Mira the fox stood in the doorway, her rust-colored tail swishing with barely contained excitement.
"So the rumors are true," Mira said, pushing her spectacles up her snout. "The Forgotten Kingdom's location has surfaced. I'll be claiming those legendary books myself, Q. Nothing personal—purely academic competition."
She darted out before Q could reply. Through the window, Q spotted three more figures emerging from the forest shadows, all heading toward the ancient grove.
Q gathered their satchel, tucking the map inside. The race had begun, whether they'd chosen to enter or not.
