The Secret Behind the Shimmering Door
Chapter 1: The Door That Wasn't There Before

Jas hummed her favorite tune as she fluttered through the oldest wing of the Whisperwood Library, her gossamer wings catching the fading sunlight. Dust motes swirled around her polka-dotted arms as she reached for a wandering book that had strayed from its shelf.
"Come along now," she said cheerfully, guiding the book home. "Your friends are waiting!"
Then she saw it.
Between two towering bookcases, where only stone wall had stood for centuries, shimmered a door. Not quite solid, not quite air—it rippled like water reflecting twilight. Golden light leaked from its edges.
Jas's hazel eyes grew wide behind her tiny round glasses. She'd grown up in this library, learned every corner from her grandmother. There had never been a door here. Never.
She flew closer, her heart thumping with excitement. The brass key around her neck—her grandmother's key—suddenly felt warm against her cream-colored dress.
"Hello?" she called, reaching toward the shimmering surface.
The door pulsed once, twice, then vanished completely.
Jas blinked. The stone wall stood solid and ordinary, as if mocking her. She pressed her small hands against the cold stone, but felt nothing unusual.
Had she imagined it? No—the key still tingled with warmth.
She glanced at the window. Twilight was fading fast. Tomorrow, she decided, she'd return at exactly the same time. Whatever secret hid behind that impossible door, her enthusiasm wouldn't let her rest until she discovered it.
