Chapter 1: The Missing Friend

Chapter 1: The Missing Friend

Hunny bounded across the cobblestone street, her bright yellow fur gleaming in the afternoon sun. Her tail wagged excitedly as she raced toward the big oak tree in her family's garden, where she and her friends always met for games.

"Max should be here by now," Hunny said, tilting her head as she looked around. The other village friends had already scattered to their homes, and the garden stood quiet except for the rustling leaves above.

This was the third time this week that Max hadn't shown up for playtime. Hunny's black eyes scanned the garden path, her small nose twitching with concern. Max was her newest friend, a shy fox kit who had just moved to the village, and Hunny wanted him to feel welcome.

Deciding to investigate, Hunny trotted down the winding path toward Max's den at the forest edge. She found him sitting outside, his russet-red fur drooping and his oversized ears flat against his head.

"Max!" Hunny called cheerfully, her pink tongue hanging out in a friendly smile. "We missed you today! We were going to play hide-and-seek."

Max's white chest rose with a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry, Hunny. I... I didn't know what time to come." His voice was barely above a whisper.

"What do you mean?" Hunny sat down beside him, her tail curling around her paws.

Max pointed to the old clock hanging on a post near his den. "My mother keeps telling me to watch the clock, but I don't understand it. The hands move, and everyone talks about hours and minutes, but it just looks confusing. I keep missing everything important."

Hunny's ears perked up with understanding. "Oh, Max! Is that all? Don't worry—I can help you learn!"

But Max shook his head, his eyes glistening. "Everyone else knows how already. I'm just too slow. Maybe I should stop trying to join the games at all."

Hunny's heart sank as she watched her friend's ears droop even lower. She had to find a way to help Max, but how could she make something as confusing as a clock make sense?
