The Ticking Trap

Remy adjusted the strap of their canvas messenger bag, double-checking the notebook inside. "Okay, Milo, remember what we talked about. No touching strange artifacts until we know what they do," Remy said, their intelligent dark brown eyes scanning the enormous stone entrance hall. Milo bounced on his heels. "I know, I know! But look at this place!" Zara, adjusting her round glasses, tapped her chin. "Fascinating architecture. But where is the exit?" Remy smoothed down their sage-green hoodie. "Let's figure out the pattern first." But before Remy could pull out a pencil, the ground trembled. The grand clock ticks loudly as twelve golden doors swing open and shut in a confusing, fast pattern. Clang! Swoosh! Bang! The massive hands on the clock spun wildly. "Whoa!" Milo yelled, darting toward the closest door. "Wait!" Remy shouted, grabbing Milo's sleeve just as the door slammed shut inches from his nose. The stone walls began to grind and slide. The castle was rearranging itself, trapping them inside the circular room.
