The Frozen Clue

The Frozen Clue

Remy adjusted the strap of their canvas messenger bag, making sure the enamel pins didn't catch on their soft sage-green hoodie. The winter air was crisp, and Remy's dark brown eyes scanned the pristine, untouched snow of their front yard. They were waiting for Milo. Remy had already mentally checked their supplies: extra mittens, two flashlights, and a thermos. Always be prepared. As Remy brushed a dusting of snow from their short, textured black hair, a glint of ice caught their attention near the mailbox. Remy crunched over to it. Stuck inside a frozen puddle was a laminated piece of paper. A map! Remy pulled it free just as a familiar figure bounded up the sidewalk. "Milo!" Remy called out. Milo practically tripped over his own boots, his scarf trailing behind him like a kite tail. "Did you find a secret mission?" Milo gasped, breathless. "Looks like it," Remy said, a quick, knowing smile spreading across their face. They read the frosted letters aloud. "'To find the winter treasure, start at the oak tree and jump exactly three sled lengths forward.'" Remy looked from the paper to the giant, snow-covered yard. The normal Saturday was gone; a mystery had just begun.
