The Broken Loo

Neo adjusted the black over-ear headphones resting over his shoulder-length blond hair, bobbing his head to a steady lo-fi beat. He leaned over the bathroom sink, inspecting the porcelain toilet in the mirror's reflection. For three days, the upstairs toilet had produced nothing but a sad, gurgling wheeze.

"Don't use the upstairs loo, Neo!" his dad called from the hallway, wiping wet pottery clay from his hands onto a towel. "The flush is completely gone. We're calling the plumber tomorrow. You'll have to trek downstairs if you need a wee or poo."

"Got it, Dad!" Neo replied, offering a warm, easy smile. But as his dad's heavy footsteps faded, Neo's bright eyes locked onto the ceramic tank. A podcast about fluid dynamics he’d listened to last week echoed in his mind. Why did it stop working? What was the actual science behind a flush?

Nature was already giving him a subtle warning rumble in his stomach, but Neo couldn't resist the mystery. He slipped his headphones down around his neck, the silver cord resting against his bright blue t-shirt. Carefully, he gripped the heavy porcelain lid of the tank and lifted it off, setting it on a towel.

Inside was a fascinating, murky world of plastic levers, a floating rubber ball, and a metal chain. It looked like a miniature water tower. Curious, Neo reached into the cold water and pressed the copper lever.

Snap.

The rusted metal chain linking the handle to the rubber stopper at the bottom broke in half. A loud, aggressive hissing filled the bathroom as water began spraying wildly from the fill valve, splashing over the edge of the tank and onto Neo's sneakers. The toilet wasn't just broken anymore; it was actively flooding.
