Star Solves the Crystal Cavern Puzzle
Chapter 1: The Broken Light
Star's rainbow hair bounced as she scrambled down the winding tunnel into the Crystal Caverns. Her yellow hard hat's headlamp swept across walls sparkling with amethyst, topaz, and emerald formations. "Wow!" she gasped, pulling out her ruler to measure a particularly impressive crystal cluster.
Elder Granite shuffled behind her, his staff tapping against stone. "The summer solstice approaches in ten days, young builder. Soon this chamber should glow like captured sunlight."
In the cavern's center, Star discovered a circular platform surrounded by broken crystal pieces—some jagged, others smooth, all different colors and sizes. Above it hung an empty framework of ancient stone arches.
"What happened here?" Star asked, her purple and blue eyes wide.
"The Crystal Puzzle," Elder Granite said, running weathered fingers over a fragment. "Once, it hung complete, catching light from the surface and filling our festival with rainbows. But time and tremors scattered it. The old sketches show how it looked, but none have solved how the pieces connect."
Star examined a sketch from the troll archives—faded lines showing crystals arranged in a mysterious pattern. Her small tusks showed through her excited grin. "I can rebuild it!"
"Perhaps," the elder said slowly. "But the pieces must fit perfectly, or the light will not flow through. And young Star—the sketches show the finished puzzle, not how to assemble it."
Star's smile faltered. The pile of crystals looked nothing like the beautiful drawing.
