The Great Mother's Day Baking Disaster
The Breaking Point

Eric sat at the kitchen table, his worn leather bracelet catching the lamplight as he carefully turned the pages of his mom's recipe book. Tomorrow was Mother's Day, and he'd planned to surprise her by baking her signature Triple-Berry Dream Cake—the one she made for every special occasion since he was little.
The book was ancient, its spine held together with tape and hope. His mom had inherited it from her grandmother, and inside the front cover was a handwritten note: "To Clara, may these recipes bring you as much joy as you've brought me. Love, Grandma Rose."
Eric's brown eyes scanned the faded cursive, trying to decipher measurements. His younger sister Maya was already asleep, and his parents had gone to bed early. Perfect timing for a secret mission.
He reached across the table for his phone, and his elbow caught the edge of the book. It tumbled toward the floor. Eric lunged, but his fingers only grazed the cover. The book hit the tile with a sickening crack.
He picked it up with trembling hands. The spine had split completely. Pages scattered like autumn leaves—including the Triple-Berry Dream Cake recipe, now torn in half. The measurements were on the piece that had slid under the refrigerator, and when Eric retrieved it, he found the corner had landed in a puddle of spilled juice.
The numbers were completely smeared away.
Eric's heart hammered against his ribs. He carefully gathered every page, but the damage was done. The book his mom treasured most in the world—broken. And the one recipe he needed—destroyed.
He sat back down, running his fingers through his tousled chestnut hair. Tomorrow was Mother's Day. Tomorrow, his mom would discover what he'd done.
